We don't need an Envy at the camp; we need a Greed
Before I watch ParaKiss 1 (thanks to
quebelly for telling me the sub was out) and then kick my ass into productive gear, I'd like to take a moment to reflect on Internet services. I miss dial-up. While it is slow as shit, it's reliable. I've had DSL and I've had cable. Both die on a moment's notice. Cable dies and requires an act of God to make it function again. DSL dies and requires patience. Nonetheless, I'm trying to get Dad to switch to DSL for the Internet just because I'm fed up with the trials of Comcast. I don't doubt that it's the fastest provider out there, but it's also the most traitorous. I can deal with my downloads and page loads being a few times slower if it means that I can trust my Internet to work when I want it. DSL dies as well but less frequently so it's got more of my respect for the time being.
I hear the manga is the better source of story when it comes to Fullmetal Alchemist, but I also hear that Greed's death is a bit less meaningful. He gets melted. Eww. My problem with manga that starts out very close to the anime is that I get bored re-reading the same thing and by the time the manga has surpassed the anime, I have lost interest. I'm trying hard not to do that with FMA, as I did with Get Backers. But as much as I loved Get Backers, I was never in it for the storyline. I enjoyed the characters and the fanservice the anime provided.
Back to Greed, I've fought with people over whether Greed or Envy is the cooler Homonculus. I've stuck with my belief that Greed is the better one. As powerful and bad ass as Envy is, he's still whipped. He's still doing what he's told. The one time that he rebels is because of a warped father-complex that just gets his ass used in the end. Greed was never used in the anime. He was betrayed, yes, but never used. He knew what he wanted. Everything. He refused to bow to orders and would rather die than be sealed, without purpose. That's how I used to view his death at Edward's hands. Now I wonder if there was more to it. The way Greed manipulated Edward into killing him, the way he never really tried to kill Edward (just subdue him) and the way he died all point to another agenda. I haven't read much speculation on this since I long abandoned the FMA comms due to their persistent wank. So I was wondering if Greed, knowing that there was no way he'd escape being sealed this time, chose to make his death significant. He wanted Edward to get back at the Homonculus, but he also knew that Edward was too idealistic to take proper action. So he gave him a push. Not only did their fighting help Edward realize that all Homonculus had a weakness, but he showed Ed that he did have the power to do what was necessary. His death gave Ed both those advantages, as well as stripping back yet more of that innocence that kept Ed a child in a man's world. The power to manipulate another, even Envy couldn't pull it off when he tried to make Edward create the Philosopher's Stone in the lab, but Greed succeeded. It's such a shame that his character had to be sacrificed for Edward to mature.
Also on the Greed vs. Envy side, Greed has an awesome animal possed, hot shades, a muscular body, pimpin' skills and amusing fashion sense. Envy gets his points for the dragon though. ^^;;
