Ghostbuster + Redneck

My Irish contribution. It has the Pogues ooooh.

Also, I am with those who are a bit worn on the LJ bitching. I don't think half of the things LJ does wrong are done with malice so much as, for lack of better word, ignorance. As in ignorant to the big picture impact. It's a business after all. As I've said before, I only desire one thing from LJ and one thing alone. FOR THEM TO GIVE ME MY COMMENT NOTIFS WITHIN TEN MINUTES OF RECEIVING A TAG. This is not an insane requirement. :\

In book news, I really want more about Levitas. I will feel majorly cheated if his story is unresolved. I want to give the little dragon a hug. That and I think Roland is a cursed name. And for heaven's sake, Novik, pick ONE name for characters and stick with. I get that people have first and last names and that CHARACTERS might refer to them as either, but as your book is in third-person, YOU should stick with one. I have no idea who anyone is in this book half the time. ONE NAME.

I dislike the hate sent toward the RPer who admitted she didn't use the HMD meme because she didn't care what anyone else thought. Yeah, part of it had to do with the snarky wording, but the rest... I didn't see where every player should have to subject themselves to a critique or that they are a lesser person for not doing so. Sure, it might hurt to know that your BURNING OPINION is considered meaningless to someone who just wants to have fun, but hey that's life. Join the Redskins fans.

I just like violence. And I'm still undecided on how I feel about the episode overall.

And yay, my Irish brown bread making was a success! Now to send it.

REALLY, NOW?

In all fairness, as I mentioned above, she worded her opinion rather viciously and even referred to the HMDs as "ego-stroking" so I didn't begrudge them for calling her arrogant. What I did begrudge them for was acting like it was irresponsible to not want an outsider's opinion and to only consult with those you directly play with. I am with her. I do not think an outsider's critique is of much value in a game for amusement. It is not a job after all.

Yyyyeah, basically. You already know my opinion on concrit/HMDs and all that. I have nooo idea of the context behind this, if the player was asked to comment to HMD for specific reasons or if she was just arrogant because she could, buuut like you said, this is not a job. And if someone was really having issues with her playing, they could just PM/email/etc. :/a

Yes, I do. That's why so many of the responses got under my skin. People being pissed someone else didn't want outside input. As for context, RPS.

Oh, why am I not surprised? :| But seriously, without going into phrasing and all that, it just sounds like a bunch of people who are butthurt because someone they wanted to attack anonymously is effectively not letting them do it. Er.

What really confused me was when they tried to argue the HMDs gave constructive criticism. I would really like to see some examples because my HMD reading experience has always been wretched. Mostly since about 80% of it has nothing to do with actual RP. orz

You forgot 'OMG YOU TALK TOO MUCH ABOUT YOURSELF IN IRC' or 'YOU TAG WITH THE SAME CHARACTER TOO OFTEN APP SOMEONE ELSE.' orz

[identity profile] nightangelca.livejournal.com 2010-03-17 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it would be really nice if they fixed comment notifications. To me, most of LJ's recent screw-ups have seemed more bumbling than anything. It seems that they've been overreaching themselves lately or something -- each time they attempt to "fix" or update something, it breaks something else. It's almost comical at this point.

Also, lol re: HMD meme thingy. It reminds me of this online article I read about the fan reaction (specifically, the sense of fan entitlement) toward... I think it was to Chuck. Thoughtful critiques and the like can be helpful for keeping both a creator (or, in this case, RPer) and the watchers/readers/etc. on the ball, but in the end? THAT PERSON WHO IS ACTUALLY THE CREATOR/RPer/WHATEVER IS THE PERSON WHOSE OPINION MATTERS. And particularly for RP, it's not like we're trying to change the world or shape popular culture here. Reading the comments here, it seems like it was the sort of thing that was just asking for a strong reaction, but the idea that a person should subject themselves and their leisure activity to the judgment of strangers in order to be valid is a pet peeve of mine. Sure, some people suck! I suck at baseball. But that doesn't mean I should be shamed out of playing catch on the weekends. (Just that I'm delusional if I think that I should have been on an Olympic softball team.)

. . . .

[/pet peeve]

[identity profile] nayami.livejournal.com 2010-03-17 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they keep having almost every day now. :(

And yeah it wasn't worded civilly at all, but the amount of "but just because they don't play with you doesn't mean their opinion is invalid" rubbed me the wrong way. Aside from their snarkiness, the person pretty much said if she doesn't play with a person, she doesn't care what they think about her RPing. And I... honestly don't see why this is a bad thing. How does it affect the people she doesn't play with? 0_o

[identity profile] nightangelca.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 04:22 am (UTC)(link)
Because we don't get any power from judging other people if our opinions don't matter to them, natch. 8|

orz.

[identity profile] zehuti.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I can understand why people reacted negatively to the snarky wording, but . . . I kind of agree with the general opinion being expressed? RP is supposed to be for fun! While critique can be good, I can see taking critique from a random stranger with a grain of salt or not even desiring it at all.

[identity profile] nayami.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't get why so many are all vehement about OMG HOW DARE YOU SAY SOMEONE YOU DON'T PLAY WITH DOESN'T HAVE GOOD INPUT ON YOUR PLAY. I'm like "uh why do you care then and why should they?" We're not writing Nobel novels here or anything. And at this point, I'm pretty much at the point with I don't even care about OOCness if I don't interact with the chara or it's not hurting their cast/those they play with. I think people are for the most part as IC as they can be in the given situation so really you have to be fucking things up for other people for me to give a damn enough to raise issue about it.

[identity profile] zehuti.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 10:39 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, exactly. I am basically over here in my corner, where I continue to believe that the HMD meme is pretty much useless for constructive crit.

[identity profile] nayami.livejournal.com 2010-03-18 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I have since reached that point after several attempts to engage an actual discussion as to what was actually wrong with my play and how I might improve it. I am now with the secret-maker who doesn't care.
