So, part of me wants to watch FMA. But part of me also remembers how FMA fandom destroyed any interest I had in that show. I don't like rabid fangirls. I also didn't like how it was considered a GOD AMONG ANIME just because it had more exposure and did better ratings-wise than other anime. I like FMA, it's fun, but I can't get into the ZOMG FMA'S BACK THIS IS THE GREATEST DAY OF MY LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIFE mentality of so many. I may wait a few episodes and then stream.

Winning quote of the day:
"I think rape is when the rapist is the unappealing villain so the victim has no chance of loving him, and non-con is when the rapist is attractive and sympathetic so the victim gets into it and falls for him by the end. That's just my rudimentary understanding, though."
-yaoi fangirl rationalizing warnings for posted yaoi manga

Wow, fangirls, just wow.

[identity profile] sapphire-hime.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know. I actually like that quote as a completely ironic warning.

It's when they mean it in all seriousness that I start to worry.

[identity profile] nayami.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they were serious. I sobbed a little.

[identity profile] equivalent-t.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 04:50 pm (UTC)(link)
'Rudimentary understanding' kind of kills me. In a not-good way.

I'm really excited by FMA Remake, as my journal might suggest. At the same time, I'm saying far, FAR away from the fandom. That last time was...rather SPECIAL. Let me do my fangirling in peace, all ye madwomen!

[identity profile] nayami.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yaoi requires advanced physics, ya know.

Oh, if I get back into FMA, that is EXACTLY what I will do.

[identity profile] rainbow-cnxn.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. Wow. It saddens me as a human being to know that people out there actually do think that.

FMA was and always will be my first anime love. The first episode seems okay. Nothing was bad, and yet it seemed to be missing some of the spark of the first series, but I'm patient. It's probably worth your time, anyways. The manga has some pretty awesome females.

And yeah, FMA fandom was fail. I went from Harry Potter fandom to FMA fandom. Everything else now seems tame by comparison.

[identity profile] nayami.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I never got into the FMA manga; I guess that's why I'm so torn about this version. I'm not sure how I'll feel about the "real" story and the new characters since I actually liked where the anime went originally. I liked Wrath and Lust and I liked the German interlude.

[identity profile] rainbow-cnxn.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I like both the manga and anime for different reasons, and I think that the criticisms levied against the first anime are overblown. I didn't particularly think that LOL EUROPE or Ed going off to stop nuclear research were good plot twists, but the characterization was still nice.

And I agree that the anime's Homunculi are largely more interesting than the manga's. Sloth was such a mindfuck.

[identity profile] nayami.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I love Sloth too!

I think my issue was I got into the manga while I was watching the anime, and they just weren't different enough at the time to continue. I didn't get to the part where they really diverge, but I've heard a lot about it from friends and such.

[identity profile] rainbow-cnxn.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Sloth's "dying" words would've screwed me up so bad. Oh god. orz

Once it diverges, it really diverges. I have to say that it takes on a different feel. Less introspective, more action-oriented. Less character development, more awesome characters doing awesome things. Personally, that's not a bad thing. It's just...different. Of course, your mileage may vary.

[identity profile] nayami.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 07:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I'm not so sure how that would fly with me since I'm always about characters over plot/action. It's why Bleach lost me so soon.

[identity profile] sapphynashi.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
...I never even finished watching the FMA anime to begin with... Although I did like it.

LOL @ quote. That's actually... Well, it has a point in an epic lulz way.

[identity profile] nayami.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Young yaoi fans are special.

[identity profile] mirax.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I get a little embarrassed now and again thinking about how OMGFANGURL!!1 I was about FMA back in college when it first aired. I still like it, but the manga will always be my preferred love. But yeah, the fandom for FMA scares me. Which is why from the start when I joined [livejournal.com profile] fm_alchemist, I never wanted to watch the community, I just wanted to be able to get some information from there. The place is a den of hell.

[identity profile] nayami.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I used to be hardcore about FMA too. It was toward the end of the series that I started getting annoyed by the comparisons and the rabidness of everything. Also the massive Envy fascination and the Roy/Ed. I admit not a fan of Roy/Ed, but I can take it or leave it. How it became a war against Riza just became ridiculous. Riza is a kickass woman.

[identity profile] mirax.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I am really glad I stayed out of the fandom *shudders*
I'll probably have to do it again for this season too. It worked well before. Ignorance is bliss sometimes.

[identity profile] defade.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
Riza is a kickass woman.

Word.

But Roy/Ed fans actually bashed Riza? I got impression that she was quite well likely in the fandom. Blurry memory from 4 years ago is blurry, though.

T-That quote, what. fdgjkdl.

Baw, I am so so torn over FMA anime. I used to be a huge fangirl back in the day, and I would, too, consider it A GOD AMONG ANIME. But then that earned me the scorn of the manga people and I just got very :| at fandom/canon in general and dropped it like a rock.

B-But now, it's like "OMG YAYAYAY ... but wait no, I had decided to shun this fandom. BUT NOW WE'LL GET SHINIES IN THE ANIME TOO ... but new voice cast. but but buuuuut." :(

[identity profile] nayami.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm, see my reply to Rainbow. It pretty much sums up how I feel about the whole manga vs. anime deal.

... y-yeah see. My absolute favorite character in FMA is Mustang, but, if you took him away? If he was not around?

A-All my love are belong to anime!Wrath.

(THIS IS THE PART WHERE 90% OF MY FRIENDS START DISOWNING ME)

[identity profile] nayami.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Mustang will always be awesome, even with a surly eyepatch.

I don't understand how anyone can hate the adorable that is anime!Wrath. That poor messed up kid. And then he got eaten in the movie. ;;

Sob, [livejournal.com profile] harukami and I rant at each other about this all the time. The anime went different ways, sure, but it wasn't all that bad? I think they did a good job with what they had at the time and making it work. Also, it's a fact that the anime was always fifty times darker than the manga (which, TBH, is part of what made it so appealing to me). SO WHY CAN'T PEOPLE JUST ACCEPT AND LOVE AN ALTERNATE TELLING OF THE STORY? :((((( sadnesssss.

[identity profile] nayami.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the darkness of the anime; it's what always drew me to it. That it had such off-the-wall moments but then could completely fuck you up. It always reminds me about how I accidentally recorded Muppets Christmas Carol on the ep where the little girl dies. Like right at the end of the episode. So there's horrible bloody Scar murdering the dog-girl and then YAY HAPPY MUPPET CHRISTMAS MUSIC. Best thing ever.

Hdsfjklsfjdk hahahahahaha omg that is so magical and horrible and perfect at the same time.

[identity profile] nayami.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It's great because I watch it with my family ever year, and they always scream at me. XD

[identity profile] danalovesbooks.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That quote also applies to any romance novel written in the 80's and early 90's.

I could not enjoy a lot of the crap I love if I payed attention to the fandoms. And yes, I do mean Twilight. Speaking of Twilight, my brothers got really drunk and are now watching the movie.

Off topic: Yay for Wednesday being a Benry centric episode of Lost. Those are always made of awesome.

[identity profile] nayami.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I'd believe it.

My roomie and her buds tried to make me watch Twilight. Emphasis on TRIED. It's not happening. Ever.

Mm Benry. Maybe it will make up for the suck of last week.

[identity profile] danalovesbooks.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
The past few weeks the only good parts of the show were the scenes with mini Benry. And the scene where Sayid was complaining to Sawyer about the chicken salad sandwich. Also, my Jack hate has grown and I didn't even think that was possible.

I will get you to watch Twilight. It will happen.

[identity profile] nayami.livejournal.com 2009-04-05 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, Jack hate has reached an epic level. And I do love mini-Benry. But everything else was the suck.

No it won't. I will DRIVE AWAY.

[identity profile] danalovesbooks.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I will hold you captive with baked goods.

[identity profile] nayami.livejournal.com 2009-04-06 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
There is very little food in existence that can compensate for watching Twilight.

[identity profile] silver-huskey.livejournal.com 2009-04-07 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Fangirls ruin everything. I try to stay away from the fandoms of anime that I really like. Wolf's Rain was a special exception because the fans were intelligent there, that and I had a chance to meet you. ^^

Personally, I'm going to give Fullmetal Alchemist a try, it'll save me the trouble of reading the manga. I'm also going to give the official FUNimation stream a try. If the subtitles are awful, I'll complain to Funi, then go with a fansub group. *shrugs.*

For now I'm annoyed that not a single fansubber has picked up or released Guin Saga, but yet we can have FMA in a day.
