Apr. 12th, 2010 06:30 pmIt's Pulitzer time! And I regret to inform you all that no, the National Enquirer didn't win. The world goes on.
However, an amazing piece of journalism about one of the most disturbing topics ever did.
"Fatal Distraction" is a story about the parents whose children die of heat exposure (literally boil to death) when the parent forgets them in a vehicle. Prior to reading this piece, I thought of these parents as worse than scum. Who the fuck could forget about their child and leave them to suffer like that? But this piece shows that it really could happen to anyone. These parents aren't evil or undeserving but just people who had the worst day imaginable. It's told with empathy and detachment and is something that will stay with you for a long time.
Warning: This is not a comfortable read. Descriptions are graphic and the pain feels very very real on the page. But if you can stomach it, it is a beautiful piece of journalism that captures a subject that so few want to understand. Definitely worthy of its prize.
