tempestuously: ([cat] too awesome for you)
I meant to return to the Internet last night, but the heat forced me to lie down, whereupon I passed out. Sorry guys. I will be on tonight though. I'm also moody that my plans for posting Wednesday are defunct due to some event I have to attend in the evening.

I had a good weekend though, spending time with Gabi and Sue again. We got lost in D.C., complained that the Thai restaurant lacked bread and manga lassi (which we realize is Indian), discussed the geopolitical situation of the end of Geass while the Thai lady kept looking at us and marathoned some True Blood Season 2.

Gabi and I finished that marathon the next day. I'm not crazy about the way Sookie is portrayed in the series, as she seems to want to make everything about her in the most aggravating way possible. But I did love Godric and Eric. The writing is also way ham-fisted and outright ridiculous at times. I forgive because it has some characters I absolutely adore like the aforementioned, as well as Sam, Jessica (such a teenager) and Lafayette. I also like Bill off and on, but I have to say that I'm a major Eric/Sookie shipper because it's just much more interesting. Eric completely steals the show whenever he's around. I will have to catch up with Season 3 now.

We also watched our usual chunk of DRRR and found out the mysteries behind Anri and Kida. Gabi kept comparing Saika to Nanatsusaya from Angel Sanctuary, which I have to agree on. I want to see more episodes with Shizuo's brother like the OP promises. But I am enjoying this war Izaya is setting up. So evil. Kida and he are still my faves.
tempestuously: ([wolf] how about a taste of my fangs?)
So someone on my FL made a remark about how there are so many un-anime-ized manga out there that borrowing Western series seems questionable. I have to say, mostly because I have a lot of manga favorites that I would KILL for decent anime versions of, that this is a fair point. But it's also not the first time Japan has done it, and it certainly won't be the last.

But enough about that, I want to talk about "Sharp Teeth." I've longed searched for a werewolf book that actually acknowledges these creatures as deadly, unbridled hunters. And this one is delivering. The free style poetry approach also makes it read very easy. But most of all, I love the way the author describes the struggle between man and beast among the lycanthropes but emphasizes that this struggle is for convenience sake only and that they have virtually no problem with their wild natures. Coherent but unapologetic werewolves? It's a miracle! I'm curious to see the way gender politics will play out in this one, as it is an inter-species romance and much of the focus is on the single lycan female. I do enjoy that she pretty much gets free rein around the pack though and isn't just the alpha/pack bitch, another common werewolf trope. The characters seem fairly simple, but as long as they stay true to the story, I don't mind. I'm just fascinated by the world and the author's interpretation of werewolves, especially their mafia-like intentions in Los Angeles. With a chessmaster as their alpha. Oh, the inspiration just keeps rolling in.
tempestuously: ([hg] come to finish me off sweetheart?)
You know you're an otaku when you stay up until 4 a.m. arguing whether Hughes would have been cheating if he saw Roy on the side while he was married to Gracia.

I enjoyed my concert, but I think Toby was a bit off that night. I'm not sure what it was. He talked through a lot of his songs. Maybe it was part of the act, but it felt strange. My highlight was when the short angry hickster women in front of us got beer dumped on them by some drunkard because they refused to move out of the way when people were trying to get back to their spots. Mmm karma. Oh yeah, these are the same people who wouldn't even move for a man in a wheelchair with a bladder bag.

Gabi and I watched more DRRR. I'm really like Shizuo and Izaya more and more, although Gabi is amusing me with her references to Shinra being the lovechild of Watanuki and Lelouch. Ouch.

My monster pitbull tried to eat Gabi, but then they became good friends. He's like that. Plus, I got to share the exciting history and sights of my old stomping ground so my weekend feels sufficiently productive.

... I think I fucked up my Angel Sanctuary post-canon interpretation, or actually the canon itself. I need to figure out how I can, um, justify it.
tempestuously: ([ph] if bird or devil)
Haaaaah Nayami failed at this weekend. But I did manage to start watching Natsume's Book of Friends with Gabi, which has some nice characters, especially Nyanko-sensei. We also tried DRRR for about three episodes so far. I might try more since I love Kida. Gabi trends toward the epic mortal enemy crack of Izaya and Shizou. That said, wow that anime hurts my brain with its mode of story-telling.

Next weekend will be my Toby Keith concert so it will hopefully result in less fail.

As I had next to no interest in playing the same ole same ole UST threads last night, Gabi and I marathoned Berserk: The Abridged Series, which is awesome and quite possibly an equal to LittleKuriboh's Yugioh series. I wish there was a CG version this good. Then because the Abridged Series gives the series a happy ending because it's pretty much impossible to parody the sheer horror that is the final episode, we watched the end episode. Part of me wants to pick up the manga, but then part of me opposes extreme nudity and constant rape. Also, I'm not a big fan of Guts, and if Griffith is evil, it's unlikely we're going to be seeing too much of him. But it was still great fun!

I am stalling on cleaning my kitties and then I get to go home for the weekend for Mother's Day. I am still not sure how I feel about visiting my mother's grave for Mother's Day, but I think it's cathartic for my father so I do it anyway.

I should start on my app thingie.

I really should stop reading comments to other people's journals, as it only tends to put me in moods.

In the bad news, weather has once again destroyed happy fun times with family.

In the good news, this means I can attend the Baccano marathon I've been eagerly anticipating for months.

Later, guys.

ETA: Wow peoples, I don't know whether to be amused or frightened. XDD But Baccano kicked some serious ass. My eternal love goes to Claire and Jacuzzi.

Good: Listening to Crispin Freeman talk about voicing Tsume without a shirt!
Bad: Standing in line for an hour and not getting Crispin's autograph. :(
Good: Getting Lelouch and shaymin plushies from the dealer's room.
Bad: None of the manga dealers had Pandora Hearts.
Good: Awesome fun hanging with the CFUDers, partially due to some quick organization tricks.
Bad: Having to compete with the hell bitch within my personal group on Thursday night.
Good: Finding awesome tapas restaurant.
Bad: Spending an hour literally walking down memory lane of Baltimore City, looking for food.
Good: Finally buying the final Geass S1 Special Edition DVD.
Bad: Evil spoilericious Geass AMV. To be fair, both Geass AMVs were gorgeous, just the first made me waaaah. This is a bad lite.
Good: Getting a picture of a gorgeous Dietrich cosplayer.
Bad: Having two friends get conned on the Baltimore streets while this was happening.

AND THE ULTIMATE GOOD/BAD INSTANCE.

Good: Overall fun con and awesome weather. (minus the randomly "buttscratcher" screaming morons who I will hunt down and slaughter like the dogs they are.)
Bad: Car is dead and I will probably have to take another day off work to deal with the madness tomorrow. :(((

List of Nayami's terrible impulse buys. )

Also I think this pic best illustrates the manic nature of my con experience. I got it whilst I was standing in line for Crispin. Baw. Every other hour, I felt like one or the other of them. )
tempestuously: ([cs] someone looks FIERCE)
Lol my fear of the final Geass PD is insane. I just gather from the pictures it's yet another complete waste of time. It makes me sadface and then it builds onto other things to the point where I get moody about hearing things I don't like in other shows too. Argh, I am too character-centric to enjoy anime, I truly am. And it's just disheartening to know my obsession is really over. I really should try to watch Kai or Ghost 07 eventually...

Oh well, Tom's coming over today so I guess I can be semi-productive, and I did get my two awards the other day. They were shiny but made me long for my old job and reminded me how much I hate my old boss for driving me away. I really did love that job more, and I probably always will. I knew that area better than I will ever know anything. Maybe when he leaves, I will go back.

I am also marathoning Oscar songs. I got as far as the 60s, but the music got lame around the time of Shaft. Which I still don't see why that's a song. But I have heard some oldies that I love and didn't listen to in a while like "Say You, Say Me" and "You Must Love Me."
tempestuously: ([as] no remorse cause i still remember)
So, part of me wants to watch FMA. But part of me also remembers how FMA fandom destroyed any interest I had in that show. I don't like rabid fangirls. I also didn't like how it was considered a GOD AMONG ANIME just because it had more exposure and did better ratings-wise than other anime. I like FMA, it's fun, but I can't get into the ZOMG FMA'S BACK THIS IS THE GREATEST DAY OF MY LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIFE mentality of so many. I may wait a few episodes and then stream.

Winning quote of the day:
"I think rape is when the rapist is the unappealing villain so the victim has no chance of loving him, and non-con is when the rapist is attractive and sympathetic so the victim gets into it and falls for him by the end. That's just my rudimentary understanding, though."
-yaoi fangirl rationalizing warnings for posted yaoi manga

Wow, fangirls, just wow.
tempestuously: ([tutu] a sorta fairytale)
American Pop: One of the best animated movies ever. It all flows so well and blends perfectly with the music. It's amazing!

Also I am marathoning Gungrave AMVs again. When oh when will more people understand the awesome that is Gungrave? Sob.
tempestuously: ([not!kamui] i keep this for trauma)
I'm watching Digimon Frontier again. Lol. I know why most Digimon fans hate this series. Because 1.) it's slightly derivative and 2.) it eliminates the premise of digimon partners. I personally don't feel the loss that heavily. I really like the darker and more intense nature of Frontier and of course those silly twins. I think were the series not labeled as part of the Digimon franchise, people would be much more approving of it. Because there is some real character development that goes on here.

And that is my thought of the day.
tempestuously: ([not!kamui] i keep this for trauma)
Coraline was awesome. What was best was watching the little children seated next to us FLIP OUT. Oh scared little childrens. Then I spent the rest of the day watching Clone High and AMVs. My coworkers have A LOT of AMVs.

But now I have Gluhen, which I haven't watched in forever and is really not that good but I love it any way. I will never stop loving Sena and his amazing glowing chakram or his randomly placed arm belts. That and Aya and Ken being gay. I'm thinking about attempting a coup of the downstairs TV so I can watch my DVDs on a clear screen and Net properly. Seeing as my roommate has had people over EVERY SINGLE DAY, I think it's a fair request. I might go for this tomorrow. Ohohoho evil plans~. No more chick flicks for them!
tempestuously: ([not!kamui] i keep this for trauma)
1. SEA KITTENS (I hear they're very tasty, so says my land kitten)
2. NEWTYPE CHARACTER RANKINGS (bonus for comm reaction)
3. JOE BIDEN'S TWO-HOUR LONG SENATE STORIES
4. BUSH ON LARRY KING "Do you think we came close to catching Bin Laden?" "I don't know."
5. $150+ MILLION INAUGURATION CELEBRATION (oh yeah most events don't come with tickets for public)
6. HETALIA ANIME OFFENDS KOREA
7. NOTORIOUS (protip: don't write bioptics about your buddies and then give yourself practically the star role. wtg puff.)
8. OBAMA VISITS BALTIMORE ON RAVEN DAY.
9. BUSH'S PLAQUE OF FOREIGN ACHIEVEMENT
10. CIRCUIT CITY WHERE SERVICE IS STATE OF THE -- bzzzzzt!
tempestuously: ([as] no remorse cause i still remember)
Got all the car stuff taken care of. It took entirely too long, but I finally managed to finish "Wish' amid all of it. Kohaku and Shuichiro do absolutely nothing for me, and the end was way rushed. Still, I love all the other characters, especially Kouryuu and Kokuyo. My coworker told me Kokuyo was the Seishirou clone, and I have to admit she was right. I think if "Wish" had been one volume longer, the end wouldn't have felt so blah and narration-y. Also, I would rather Kouryuu be with Kohaku than Shuichiro. Kouryuu has a personality.

Speaking of personalities, I am almost finished Shinshi Doumei Cross and hope to be done by today or tomorrow. I'm not Haine's biggest fan, but I love almost everyone else. My favorites are Maguri and Maora, although Takanari and Haine's little brother hold special places in my heart. As does Ushio. I'm so happy that for once the gay couple doesn't get screwed in shoujo. That said, Maguri and Takanari's relationship is precious.

I have a party tonight so I have to prettify myself later one. I want new Casshern.
tempestuously: ([cs] put my life in their hands)
I burned my fingers on my cookies. I think that's what happens when my instructions tell me to roll them in confectioner's sugar AS SOON AS THEY ARE OUT OF THE OVEN. Gabi suggested using a spoon. She is the smart one. Hopefully these cookies will turn out better than the ones that told us to put cream cheese frosting on them. The cookies themselves are cool without the frosting.

Marathon is going well though. D.C. Part. 2 will happen tomorrow. Maybe I'll finally be able to save Suzaku figma from the post office.
tempestuously: ([cs] knows the score)
Well, I caught completely up with Casshern. Friender is my favorite character ever. He totally owns the show. The episode with him and gay robot Jin was my favorite. I also am entranced by the evil robot army, run by Leda and Dio. D'awww cyborg love. The Braiking Boss, however, is lame so I hope he dies soon. His only use was making Casshern much more interesting as far as me finally knowing what the hell is going on. I do agree with Rainbow that the characters of the week can be pretty awesome, but most of them lean on the emo side. I love how the show did its cliffhanger thing on Episode 13. So predictable. I'm guessing this is a 26 episode series show and not 52? People in the know may have more insight on that. Casshern is getting somewhat more of personality now so yay. He is still very pretty to watch, especially when he fights. Points if he fights with Friender and/or Kyuze ( I still like calling her "girl"). I need to make icons of awesome Jin and possibly Friender and maybe snugglies of Dio and Leda.

And now I'm going to go pass out from late.

ETA: Icons get-o!
tempestuously: ([frontier] accidentally in love)
I think before I lol at my New Year's Resolutions this year, I should do a tally on how I fared with those last year.

2007 Resolutions:
1. WRITE MOAR!! Find some way to manage time or whatever to write again or at least attempt.
2. Take more assertive role in career.
3. Conquer fear of driving to certain places like airports and convention centers.
4. Stop being such a damn chicken when it comes to the Internets.
5. Finish Psychosis. Hah I'm laughing at that too.

2007 Results
1. FAILURE.
2. SUCCESS. New job and people that don't treat me like shit. o/
3. MOSTLY SUCCESS. Can drive people to airports with ease. Baltimore driving still scares the living fuck out of me, but I can transit to Otakon and Katsucon so yay.
4. EPIC FAILURE. This just got worse. :(
5. EPIC FAILURE.

2008 Resolutions:
1. WRITE FUCKING PSYCHOSIS/HERITAGE. Manage time in non-crappy way.
2. Doing pretty good with the socialness. Up that some!
3. Cook more than just cookies. That way I won't die of not eating.
4. Find new series to obsess over in unhealthy ways. :D
5. READ ACTUAL BOOKS.

In other news, SE 6 summary made me happy. Casshern Sins is almost HILARIOUSLY emo, and I am holding off judgment on that one until I get a few more episodes in. I like the girl though. She's badass. I have to figure out what to do with my day since I just realize it's EXTREMELY STUPID to go to D.C. on New Year's Eve. Oh and I bought Gabi a new Stage 0 book since I put a carton of blue cheese dressing in my purse, where the book happened to be. I know. I r smrt.
tempestuously: ([not!kamui] i keep this for trauma)
Well, I got reamed today but otherwise prediction 1 was correct so I can breathe normally again.

I've been having a bad week, but your gift made me smile muchly, Graham. Even though I confused it with the doujin I ordered from Thailand, which will probably never see the light of day. Alas.

I might have a marathoning partner for this weekend.
tempestuously: ([tb] like a tiger to tame)
I am an incredibly lazy person so I will probably not join in on this inksome trend until more substantial communities do. I might bookmark some friends' pages to stalk if they are truly abandoning LJ, but we'll see how this works out. Because when push comes to shove, LJ truly does meet all of my journaling needs outside RP ones. I like icons for my personal LJ sure, but I don't need them. I don't even really care about having ads on my screen. I just like rambling. I do think though that if LJ wants to maintain its base, IT BETTER GET ON THE BALL WITH THE USERPIC PROMISE.

My marathoning has been going well, and I'm in prime analytic mode. For anyone who knows what I'm talking about, please do not comment specifically about it, k?

I love how I can always find my car in parking lots by looking for the one that is worst parked. That is an accomplishment.

I am excited about an assignment again. I do so love my happy news, and this one is wild! Watch it devour time that should be spent working on my larger project.

As I haven't said anything about Veterans Day, I will point out that I celebrate it the way I always do: putting "Riding with Private Malone" on repeat for hours. I still cry.
tempestuously: ([kamui] bloodlust)
Quick review on Black Butler: Sebastien is hot, and I'm perving on shota again dammit. But yes, I have DEFINITELY found my anime for this season. I've been awaiting this one eagerly. *_* Now to decide if one more can fit on the list with Pushing Daisies and True Blood.

Make some anime recs people! Remember I will only choose one.

What Nayami looks for in an anime:

-Strong plot or at least strong enough for me to feasibly make up the rest
-Intriguing characters [Read: Fucked-up characters]
-Sexy demons/supernatural-like things
-ANGST
-Occasionally shoujo fluff but it has to be rockin' like Host Club
-Mechs but they have to be BADASS and awesome looking and they have to come with really good characters (Sorry, 00 still not clicking for some reason. ;;)
-Good animation. This is a must. I'm a super snob about this, and it's the reason I have issues with Vampire Knight anime.
-Alternative means of canons (manga, games, drama cds) are also a plus

So what's hot?
